A chemical investigation of keratin and carcinomas deriving from rabbit papillomas (Shope).

چکیده
In 1933, Shope (14) described a virus-induced papilloma occurring naturally in the cottontailS rabbit (genus Sylvilagus) and transmissible to the domestic rabbit (genus Oryctolagus). Later, Rous and Beard (13) found that the experimentally in duced papillomas in domestic rabbits often pro gressed to carcinomas; and Syverton and Berry (16,17)observedthesamephenomenon incotton tail rabbits. Because of its possible significance for the pathogenesis of mammalian cancers in@general, this virus-induced papilloma-to-carcinoma se quence aroused wide interest and has been the sub ject of numerous investigations. An outstanding feature of the Shope papilloma .istheproduction ofexcessive amounts ofkeratin ized epithelium, which may develop into enormous epithelial horns, sharply demarcated from the Un derlying tissue.t The present communication con cerns some of the chemical properties of this “keratin― and also of carcinomas deriving from the papillomas in cottontail rabbits. Keratinization, or cornification, which reflects the ultimate natural alterative change in super ficially situated structures of ectodermal origin, yields a wide variety of hard anuclear entities, such as horns, hoofs, nails, hair, the outer layers of

متن کاملCellular Retinole Acid-binding Protein in Virus-induced Shope Papillomas of Rabbit Skin1
Cellular retinole acid-binding protein (cRABP) was detected in the cytosol of virus-induced papilloma (Shope) of rabbit skin. The Shope papilloma cRABP showed the same ligand specific ity and sedimentation value (2S) as was found in other animal species. The level of cRABP in the papillomatous tissue was significantly higher than that in the normal rabbit skin and increased in accordance with t...
متن کاملExperiments on the Cause of the Rabbit Carcinomas Derived from Virus-induced Papillomas
Three out of four carcinomas arising from rims-induced, rabbit papillomas have grown well after transplantation to sucklings. Two were propagated serially, and it seems likely that all could have been maintained indefinitely had litters been available of newborn animals of the sort in which they arose. These successes are the more worthy of note because of the well-nigh uniform failure of simil...
متن کاملFluorescent Antibody Detection of the Antigens of the Shope Papilloma Virus in Papillomas of the Wild and Domestic Rabbit
The results obtained by a fluorescent antibody study of the Shope papilloma virus in papillomas of the wild and domestic rabbit are presented. In the wild rabbit papillomas the viral antigens occurred exclusively in the nucleus and were present in the differentiating cells of the keratohyaline layers and in the keratinized layers. The antigens were not present in the deeper proliferating epithe...
متن کاملOBSERVATIONS ON THE RELATION OF THE VIRUS CAUSING RABBIT PAPILLOMAS TO THE CANCERS DERIVING THEREFROM II. THE EvmENcE PROVIDED BY T~E TU~0gS: GE~'-E~X, CONSIDERATIONS
In an accompanying paper the relationship of the Shope virus engendering papillomas to the cancers deriving from these growths has been approached from the side of the virus. I t will now be considered in the light of certain data provided by the tumors themselves. The papilloma is known to be characterized by those traits of appearance and behavior which distinguish neoplasms from other pathol...
